Kirk Cousins's Net Worth and Salary?
Kirk Cousins,
the American football quarterback, is sitting on a cool $180 million. Drafted
by Washington back in 2012, he started off as RGIII's backup. But when Griffin
struggled with injuries and consistency, Cousins stepped up in 2015. He showed
he could run an offense, racking up over 4,000 passing yards. Because of
drawn-out contract talks, he got franchise-tagged *twice*.

Then, in 2018,
Cousins signed a groundbreaking three-year, $84 million deal with the Minnesota
Vikings – fully guaranteed! He brought some stability to their offense, helped
them get into the playoffs a few times, and even broke team records for
completion percentage and passer rating. Known for being super prepared and
level-headed, Cousins usually ranks high among quarterbacks in terms of
completion rate and touchdown-to-interception ratio. He's been to the Pro Bowl
four times and hit the 40,000-yard mark in 2023.
Cousins has
always been known for being consistent, not flashy. People often call him one
of the most dependable, if not always the most exciting, quarterbacks in the
league. In March 2024, Kirk inked a $180 million contract with the AtlantaFalcons. Outside of football, Cousins is involved in charity work through the
Julie and Kirk Cousins Foundation and is well-regarded for his professionalism
and work in the community. His staying power, good numbers, and those big
contracts have made him a notable quarterback of his generation.
Breaking Down the Contracts
– Over $400 Million in Earnings!
After that
awesome 2015 season, Washington used the franchise tag to keep Kirk around. It
kept him from becoming a free agent, but it also meant he got a $22 million
salary for that year. They tagged him again the next season. Doing it twice
forced them to bump his salary to $24 million. If they'd tagged him a third
time, they would've had to pay him 44% more! So, they reluctantly let him test
free agency. This was the first time Kirk decided to bet on himself and chase a
massive contract instead of settling for something smaller but safer. He'd do
that a few more times in his career, and it paid off big time.
When Cousins joined the Vikings in 2018, he got that unprecedented fully guaranteed $84 million contract. Before that, he was supposedly looking at an offer from the New York Jets that would have paid him $60 million in the first year alone, plus bonuses!
In March 2020,
he signed a two-year, $66 million extension with the Vikings, which included a
$30 million signing bonus. That made him one of the highest-paid players in the
NFL and one of the 30 highest-paid entertainers in the world.
Kirk went back
into free agency in 2024. Again, he decided to gamble on himself by not signing
a deal beforehand. Between his NFL start in 2012 and March 2024, Kirk made $231
million in NFL salary alone. Then, on March 11, 2024, he signed a 4-year, $180 million
contract with the Atlanta Falcons. The deal included a $50 million signing
bonus, and $100 million of it is guaranteed. By the time this contract is up,
Kirk's career earnings will be over $410 million!
How It All Started
Kirk Cousins
was born on August 19, 1988, in Barrington, Illinois. He was the middle child
of Maryann and Don. In high school at Holland Christian in Michigan, he was a
star in football, baseball, and basketball. As a football player, Cousins threw
for 3,204 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions during his high school
years.
College Days
Cousins got a
football scholarship to Michigan State University. He redshirted his first year
in 2007, and in 2008, he was Brian Hoyer's backup. In 2009, Cousins became the
starting quarterback for the Spartans, throwing for 2,680 yards, 19 touchdowns,
and nine interceptions in 12 games. In 2010, he led the team to an 11-2 record
and a tie for the Big Ten title. In 2011, Cousins led the Spartans to an 11-3
record and the first-ever Big Ten Football Championship Game, but they lost.
The next year, they won the Outback Bowl.
Washington Redskins Years
In the 2012 NFL
draft, the Washington Redskins picked Cousins in the fourth round. He only
played three games in his first season, throwing for 466 yards, four
touchdowns, and three interceptions. The Redskins won the NFC East but lost in
the Wild Card Round. In 2013, Cousins threw for 854 yards, four touchdowns, and
seven interceptions in five games, and the Redskins didn't make the playoffs.
In 2014, he had 1,710 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Cousins had a
breakout year in 2015. He led the Redskins to their biggest comeback win ever,
throwing the winning touchdown in the final seconds against the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week twice and NFC
Offensive Player of the Month once that season. He also led the league with a
69.8% completion percentage. The Redskins won the NFC East but lost in the Wild
Card Round.
Cousins kept
playing well in 2016, throwing for a career-high 4,917 yards and making his
first Pro Bowl. In 2017, he had his third straight season with at least 4,000
passing yards, throwing for 4,093 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
He also ran for a career-high 179 rushing yards.
Minnesota Vikings Time
In 2018,
Cousins signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He had a great first season,
throwing for 4,298 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. But the Vikings
barely missed the playoffs. In 2019, his stats weren't as good, but he still
made the Pro Bowl. The Vikings made it to the Divisional Round but lost to the
San Francisco 49ers. In 2020, Cousins threw for 4,265 yards, 35 touchdowns, and
13 interceptions, but the Vikings missed the playoffs again. The next season,
he had 4,221 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, and made
his third Pro Bowl. But the Vikings still didn't make the playoffs.
The Vikings had
a great season in 2022, including a game where they completed the largest
comeback in NFL history against the Indianapolis Colts. They won the NFC North.
Cousins finished the season with 4,547 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14
interceptions, and made his fourth Pro Bowl. But they lost in the Wild Card
Round. Cousins played one more season with the Vikings in 2023 but got injured
and missed the rest of the season.
Atlanta Falcons Contract in
2024
In March 2024,
Cousins signed a four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons worth $180
million. In December 2024, the Falcons benched Cousins. At the same time, there
were rumors that the team would cut him soon. If that happens, the Falcons
would still need to pay him $90 million. By the time he was benched, Kirk had
played 14 games and thrown 17 touchdowns for the team.
