Early
life and acting background
DiCaprio is born in Los Angeles,
California, on November 11, 1974. He is the only child of Irmelin Indenbirken,
a German legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an American underground comix
artist and distributor. The couple met at college, and after graduation, they
moved to Los Angeles. George's paternal grandparents, Salvatore Di Caprio and
Rosina Cassella, were Italians, while his mother, Olga Anne Jacobs, had German
descent. Irmelin's father, Wilhelm Indenbirken, was German, whereas her mother,
Helene Indenbirken, was indeed a Russian immigrant, residing in Germany. Some
sources also falsely claim that Helene was born in Odesa, Ukraine; there is no
proof that DiCaprio has any relatives of Ukrainian birth or heritage. So the
question has arisen about the truth.
Salary
Leonardo's basic salary for
Titanic was $2.5 million. He also negotiated a wise 1.8% share of gross revenue
backend points. After Titanic went on to gross $3 billion worldwide at the box
office, DVD, and from syndication, Leo's total take on Titanic was $40 million
Leo's biggest early paycheck was
the $1 million he earned for 1995's The Basketball Diaries. The success of
Titanic then allowed Leo to command $20 million for 2000's The Beach. He earned
a $10 million base salary for Gangs of New York. He then earned $20 million for
each of Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, The Departed, and Blood Diamond. For
Inception, Leo again negotiated gross percentage points, allowing him to earn
just under $60 million. Between 1995 and 2020, Leonardo is estimated to have
made at least $300 million from box office salaries and bonuses. Both he and
Brad Pitt took paychecks to $10 million apiece (down from $20 million) to
appear alongside each other in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 Charles Manson movie
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Endorsements and investments
For many years, Leonardo's image
has largely sold Tag Heuer watches, particularly on print advertisements. Then
there were many other brands offshore. He has filmed Jim Beam commercials in
Japan and has also worked in an ad for a Japanese credit card company which
reportedly paid him up to $5 million. He became the brand ambassador for a
Chinese electric car company, BYD, in 2017. And he was perhaps among the first
investors into Beyond Meat-a vegan offender meat company-that went public in
May 2019 at a valuation of $4 billion. Sadly, though, by mid-2022, the
valuation of BYND had dwindled to below $1 billion.
Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation
Not unfamiliar perhaps with
assisting the needy, this artistic titan has long been donating to a variety of
causes. He has put money and resources behind organizations such as Declare
Yourself, Feeding America, Global Cool, Global Green, Pediatric Epilepsy
Project, and many others, thus leaving a trail of several other charities that
have benefited immensely from this actor's selflessness and generosity.
Real Estate
With a dab of real estate master,
Leo's real estate brush (including the private island which we will deal with
next) must be worth anything more than $100 million.
This is HIS FIRST oceanfront
Malibu house, which he bought in 1998 for $1.6 million, and was listed for sale
by him in 2015 for $11 million but he chose to rent it out instead for
$25-50,000 per month (depending on length of stay). He finally sold the house
for slightly above $10.3 million in November 2021, $300,000 more than the final
asking price. Video walkthrough of that former DiCaprio mansion:
Leo owns at least two other
oceanfront properties in Malibu, one of which he bought in 2016 for $23
million.
He must own some dozen homes in
Southern California, including several in Hollywood Hills, three in Malibu, and
two in Silver Lake. By the end of 2022, DiCaprio had been reported to acquire
his neighbor's house for $10.5 million to add to his Hollywood Hills compound.
In 2014, he bought Dinah Shore's
former Palm Springs mansion for $5.2 million. In 2017, he purchased a chunk of
land in Malibu for $23 million.
He bought a blufftop mansion
overlooking the ocean in Malibu for just under $14 million in September of
2021.
Two apartments in New York City
belong to him. Firstly, he purchased a 2.5-bedroom bachelor pad for $10 million
in 2014. The second apartment is indeed the combined result of two side-by-side
purchases in one building over two transactions totaling $11.7 million.
Private Island and Eco Resort
In 2005, Leo purchased for $1.75
million a 104-acre private island located in Belize. For many years, he pretty
much left the island untouched but in 2016 announced that he was converting it
into an eco-friendly private resort called Blackadore Caye (which is also the
name of the island). According to the latest designs, Blackadore Caye will
comprise 36 bungalows and 36 estate homes that will be sold to individual
owners. All homes and facilities on the island will run on renewable energy and
will have zero carbon footprint. The estimate for the sale price for the
personal homes is somewhere between $5 million-15 million a piece.
