Early life and education
Channing Matthew Tatum was born on April 26, 1980, in
Cullman, Alabama, to Kay Tatum (née Faust), an airline worker, and Glenn Tatum,
a construction worker. He has a sister, Paige. He lived a rustic life until the
age of ten, close to the bayous along the Pascagoula River.
Tatum has said he had struggled with ADD and dyslexia
growing up, which impeded him from excelling at school. In his younger years,
Tatum was part of football, soccer, track, baseball, and wuzuquan kung fu.
Tatum spent most of his teenage years in the Tampa area,
where he started at Gaither High School. His parents wanted him to exert more
effort and either offered him the option of a private high school or military
school; it turned out he chose Tampa Catholic High School, where he graduated
in 1998 and was named most athletic.
At this time, Us Weekly reported that Tatum left his job as
a roofer and began working as a stripper at a local nightclub under the name
"Chan Crawford”. This was the inspiration for the film-by the name of
Magic Mike.
Channing Tatum's Magic Mike Paydays
Channing rolled the dice with Magic Mike. Whereas a studio
would traditionally put up the funds and take the lion's share of the profits,
Channing and fellow producer Steven Soderbergh financed the $7 million
themselves and simply paid Warner Bros. a flat fee to distribute the movie.
Box-office, streaming, and DVD sales were nothing short of a mega-hit for Magic
Mike. The end result was that Channing and Soderbergh made $60 million each.
The duo garnered another $30 million each from the next installment.
Red Shirt Paydays
Channing received $25 million for starring in Simon
Kinberg's Amazon original film Red Shirt. Kinberg reportedly received $8
million for his writing and producing work. The director of the film, David
Leitch, earned $18 million.
Personal Life
Channing met Jenna Dewan on the set of Step Up in 2006. Their
daughter, Everly, was born in May 2013 in London, where the couple had been
staying while filming Jupiter Ascending. Their divorce was finalized in
November 2019. Because they were wed during some very successful years for
Channing, it is believed that Jenna received a divorce settlement in the $20
million to $30 million range, including real estate and ongoing spousal
support.
Tatum began dating singer Jessie J in 2018. They broke up
for a while in 2019 but seemed to have reconciled early in 2020. He dated Zoë
Kravitz in 2021, and the couple got engaged in 2023.
