James
Eugene Carrey (born
January 17, 1962) is a Canadian-American actor and comedian. Carrey was born in
Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, to Kathleen (née Oram), homemaker, and Percy
Carrey, musician, and accountant. He was raised Catholic, having three older
siblings, John, Patricia, and Rita. His mother was of Irish and Scottish
descent and his father French-Canadian; the original family surname was Carré.
At
the age of eight, he started making faces in front of the mirror and found out
that he could also do impressions. At ten, Carrey wrote a letter to Carol
Burnett of the Carol Burnett Show, stating that he was already a master of
impressions and that she should consider him for a part on the show; he was
elated to receive an answer in the form of a letter. He was a fan of Monty
Python, and in 2014, while appearing on Monty Python's Best Bits (Mostly),
Carrey recounted the effect on him of the character of Ernest Scribbler (played
by Michael Palin) laughing himself to death in "The Funniest Joke in the
World" sketch. According to Radio Times, "You'll see why immediately:
Palin's performance is uncannily Carreyesque."
Carrey
spent the early days at Scarborough, Ontario, a suburb in the greater Toronto
area, where he studied at Blessed
TrinityCatholic Elementary School in North York, later moving to
Burlington, Ontario, where they would spend eight years, with Jim going
to Aldershot
High School during that time. Some time later, the family lost its
home and lived together in a Volkswagen van while teenage Jim and his brother
spent months living in a tent at Charles Daley Park on the Lake Ontario shore
in Lincoln, Ontario. The family was much in financial distress during that
time, but their condition started to improve when his father got a job in the
accounting department at the Titan Wheels tire factory in close proximity in
Scarborough.
Also,
in exchange for living in the house across the street from the factory, the
family, mainly teenage sons Jim and John, worked at the tire factory as
custodians and security guards, putting in eight-hour night shifts from 6 p.m.
till the next morning. Returning to Scarborough, adolescent Jim began attending
Agincourt Collegiate Institute before dropping out on his sixteenth birthday.
He performed comedy in downtown Toronto while working at the factory. In a 2007
interview with the Hamilton Spectator, Carrey stated, "If my career in
show business hadn't panned out, I would probably be working today in Hamilton,
Ontario, at the Dofasco steel mill." He could see the steel mills across
Burlington Bay and often thought that's where "the great jobs were"
as a young man.
Relationships
In
1983, Carrey dated singer Linda Ronstadt for eight months. On March 28, 1987,
Carrey married his second wife, former actress and wait-staff at The Comedy
Store, Melissa Womer. Their daughter, Jane Erin Carrey, was born on September
6, 1987. Carrey and Womer divorced in 1995.
On
September 23, 1996, Carrey married his co-star from Dumb and Dumber, Lauren
Holly; this second marriage lasted for less than a year. From 1999 to 2000,
Carrey was engaged to his co-star from Me, Myself and Irene, Renée Zellweger.
In 2002, he dated January Jones. In 2005, Carrey met model and actress Jenny
McCarthy, with whom he publicly announced his relationship in June 2006; they
broke up in April 2010, with McCarthy noting in October 2010 that they remained
good friends. In 2012, Carrey met the makeup artist from County Tipperary,
Ireland, Cathriona White. They were in a relationship from 2012 to 2015. White
was found dead from a prescription drug overdose on September 28, 2015; the
death was ruled a suicide by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Carrey
was a pallbearer at the funeral in Cappawhite, Ireland. Ginger Gonzaga was
Carrey's guest at the Golden Globes 2019 Party in January 2019.They broke up
less than a year after they began dating.
Highest Paid Actor
In
the late 90s till the 2000s, Jim was often named one of the highest-paid
entertainers in the world. Jim Carrey was the first actor to earn $20 million
for a single film, which was for "The Cable Guy" in 1996. He has
earned hundreds of millions of dollars in film salaries and backend bonuses
throughout his career thus far.
A Blank Check Comes True
As
the legend has it, Jim Carrey, who was very broke and heavily depressed one day
in 1985, drove his beat-up Toyota Camry into the hills of Hollywood. Standing
there overlooking all of Los Angeles, he wrote himself a check for $10 million
"for acting services rendered." He postdated the check ten years down
the line and put it in his wallet. Spoiler alert - within 10 years, his dream
came true. He later put the check into his father's coffin when he died in
1994.
Success
Carrey's
first taste of success was when he gained prominence in 1990 through a Wayans'
brothers sketch comedy show known as In Living Color, where Jim wowed audience
members with characters like the masochistic and accident-prone Fire Marshall
Bill. Jim remained on In Living Color until the show was canceled in 1995;
however, shortly before its cancellation, his first major feature film was
released, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The film instantly rocketed him to
stardom. The same year saw him in major box-office hits, The Mask and Dumb and
Dumber. His new salary on The Cable Guy of $20 million would set a record.
Other
notable comedic vehicles for Carrey included Liar, Liar, Bruce Almighty, Me,
Myself, and Irene, and Yes Man. He has also worked in several drama films and
dramedies such as The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The
Majestic, Man on the Moon, and thriller The Number 23. More recently, Jim
Carrey has returned to comedy playing Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog
franchise, appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020 and its sequel in 2022.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gave Carrey the best opening of his career, with an
estimated $72 million opening weekend box office in the United States.
