He had started acting for real through theatrical plays, thus the actor started training at the American Conservatory Theater. Off-Broadway productions. He got into television as Dr. Phillip Chandler on NBC's St. Elsewhere (1982-1988), which pioneered a cast representation of African American actors. Then he went to cinema in great fame and following awards.

- "American Gangster" (2007): $267,985,456

- "Safe House" (2012): $207,884,401

- "Philadelphia" (1993): $201,324,422

Here are the top ten salaries that Denzel accrued from some of his best-known films. Just from these ten films alone, Denzel's earnings total more than $200 million ($203 million specifically).

#10: Virtuosity (1995) - $7.5 million

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe star in this sci-fi film set in the future, where Denzel plays a former cop imprisoned for murdering a man who killed a member of his family. This film had mixed to negatively received reviews, but many people feel that both actors deserved any awards. Still, Denzel was paid $7.5 million for his involvement.

#9: Courage Under Fire (1996) - $10 million

Some of the co-stars in "Courage Under Fire" include Meg Ryan, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Matt Damon, and the film is about the unfortunate and sometimes complicated ways in which soldiers lose their lives in battle. The film was mostly well received, and Denzel earned $10 million for his part in it.

#8: The Hurricane (1999) - $10 million

The film, based on the real events of boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and his 20 years of imprisonment for triple murder, garnered immense praise, awards, and recognition. Altogether, one of his defining roles, Washington took home $10 million for his work in this film.

#7: Fallen (1998) - $12 million

Critics wrote up good things about this, one of a kind supernatural thriller, while most of the audience actually enjoyed. On the downside, critics blasted the gaps in logic and horrendous script; yet, none of that mattered to Denzel and his $12 million paycheck for the lead role.

#6: The Siege (1998) - $12 million

Denzel Washington plays the FBI special agent Anthony Hubbard "set up" to catch terrorists in the movie. This film was mixed because of its theme, and the co-stars are Bruce Willis and Annette Bening. However, it has to be said that Washington left nothing to be desired with what little he had to do in the film and so received $12 million for his services.

Training Day (2001) - $12 million

Rewriting the roles he has solidly portrayed since, "Training Day" shows yet another instance of Denzel having what it takes for roles that deviate from his accustomed casting. A big hit at the box office and recipient of several awards, he earned $12 million for having been crookedly this time.

Excluded by Time (2003) – $20 million

This spy thriller sex appeal film featuring Eva Mendes and Sanaa Lathan also made a decent splash. Denzel was paid $20 million as Mathias Lee-Whitlock.

Man on Fire (2004) – $20 million

A thriller starring Denzel with Dakota Fanning, the film showed him in the role of an ex-CIA agent turned mercenary, who is entrusted to safeguard and comfort a nine-year-old girl, Lupita. Meantime, Washington made a $20 million grocery out of it.

American Gangster (2007) – $40 Million

With a biographical movie taking a glimpse at the sinister life of Frank Lucas, "American Gangster" indeed acid-tested the entertainment perpetrator and brought him over the top gloriously. The Erickson, one of the biggest wheel in Warner Media history, in fact, led the public into the view that this movie and its soundtrack would go on and become instant classics. Further to that, Washington made a rivalry-equals-$40M.

The Little Things (2021) - $60 million

In 2021, he was to disburse a $20 million payday upon signing to do "The Little Things," and tens of millions more would pour into his pocket afterwards under the profit-sharing scheme. Warner Media decided to offer the movie for free on HBO MAX in 2021; the reason given was that the film was relieved of revenue on account of the lockdown. Therefore, to alleviate the rub on Washington's palms, Warner released a one-time bonus of $40 million.

His Success

Washington finally struck gold in terms of acting by taking a stand for a South African activist in "Cry Freedom" (1987); the post secured his first Academy Award nomination, and he became one of Hollywood's most emphatically nominee-annual stars. Only two years later, though, Washington garnered his first Best Supporting Actor Oscar from the Academy for his fiery performance as private Silas Trip in the drama "Glory" (1989). Washington, at the height of his career through the turn of the century, pursued large-budget productions that generated very pronounced leaps into limelight for his enormous charisma and gravitas. One such smasher was "Remember the Titans" (2000), after which, "Training Day" (2001) showcased an utterly spectacular and undoubtedly iconic performance that no one would ever forget in his career ever—an Oscar-winner for Best Actor; the actor became only the second Black actor in Oscar history to receive it. What came after were in-erasable performances on films like "John Q" (2002)," Man on Fire" (2004), and "Inside Man" (2006), showing the world just how completely-versatile he was.

Awards and Honors

In 1988 Washington received a nomination for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the film "Cry Freedom" about anti-apartheid; he won the same award in 1989 for "Glory.

Washington had another nomination for Best Actor for 1992 "Malcolm X," then again in 1999 earning a Golden Globe and Academy Award win for "The Hurricane." In 2002, he was awarded Best Actor for "Training Day," making it only the second time an African American had done so. The same year saw him in Disney's football drama "Remember the Titans," which did over a $100 million box office and hoped for a Black Reel and NAACPImage Award, both in Best Actor.

Career in Directing and Producing

In 2002, Washington directed "Antwone Fisher" for the screen. He has also directed productions such as "The Great Debaters" (2007) and "Fences" (2016). He has produced several movies, including "The Book of Eli" and "The Equalizer," in addition to many television programs. Washington is now set to produce an upcoming film titled "The Piano Lesson."

In the late '90s. Denzel and his wife, wanted to build a large mansion on a piece of land that hadn't already been developed, available in the exclusive gated community of Beverly Park high up on the hills in Beverly Hills. One mansion is 30,000 square feet in size, and the guesthouse is 5,000 square feet. Closer to him is Mark Walhberg's home that was put on the market in April 2022 for $87.5 million, with an eventual sell directly to one buyer at $55 million in February 2023. Here is a photo of Denzel's mansion under construction at the end of 1999:

Denzel and his wife bought a 6-bedroom, 8,000-square-foot condo in Century City, California, for the amount a little less than $11 million in April 2022; the seller was Her Royal Highness Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, one of late King Faisal's grandchildren.
