Cruise was born to electrical
engineer Thomas Cruise Mapother III (1934-1984) and special education teacher
Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer, 1936-2017), on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. The
couple had both come from Louisville, Kentucky, and had English, German, and
Irish roots. Thomas had three sisters: Lee Anne, Marian, and Cass. One of his
cousins, William Mapother, is also an actor who starred with Cruise in five
films.
Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (born
July 3, 1962) is a famous American actor and film producer. He has become a
Hollywood legend along with having won several honors and awards like Honorary
Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards and having been nominated four times
for Academy Award. His films by the year 2025 have grossed over $13.3 billion
worldwide, placing him among the highest-grossing actors of all time. Working
in Hollywood, he is one of the most bankable and top-paid actors in the world.
Cruise holds the Guinness World Record for the
most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies, with that honor spanning seven
films released between 2011 and 2018. He was awarded the US Navy's
Distinguished Public Service Award, its highest civilian honor, in December
2024. This Award was given in honor of his great work and contributions for the
military with his acting. In March 2025, he was named BFI Fellow, the British
Film Institute's top honor, in recognition of his contribution to film. Forbes
named him the most powerful celebrity in the world in 2006.

Currently, there are more than twenty

Tom Cruise a real box-office attraction worldwide. Not putting inflation into
consideration, Tom's gross total from worldwide box office sales is a hefty
$9.5 billion.

the 1985 Legend, he was given an increased pay of $500000

• He
earned $3 million for Cocktail
• $9
million for Days of Thunder
• $13
million for Far and Away
• $12
million for A Few Good Men
• $12
million for The Firm
• $15
million for Interview with a Vampire
By virtue of his producer credits,
Tom made full $70 million from all his credits on the first Mission Impossible.
He made $75 million for Mission Impossible 3.
The two films from one of the world's
highest-earning actors, such as 2000's Mission Impossible 2 and 2005's War of
the Worlds, were the most he has ever made in one film. For each of the movies,
he made $100 million due to lucrative backend points. If you look through a
list of the 10 largest acting paychecks of all time (for a single movie), Tom
Cruise ranks on three occasions. Those already mentioned $100 million pays also
come third and fourth behind Bruce Willis' $105 million Sixth Sense payday and
Keanu Reeves' $156 million Matrix payday.
Tom earned a total of $445 million in
film salaries from 1983 to 2011. Between 2011-2019, he may have earned another
$300 million or more, giving a total of $745 million in career earnings (salary
plus bonuses) from 1983 to 2019.
Top Gun Salary/Earnings
As we said earlier, Cruise earned $2
million for "Top Gun" in 1986. Adjusted for inflation today, that's
the equivalent of about $5.4 million. Believe it or not, that $2 million was
almost 13 percent of Top Gun's entire $15 million budget. We don't know how
much the other original co-stars such as Kelly Mcgillis and Val Kilmer earned.
Presumably a lot less than $2 million.
During the making of Top Gun, there
happened to be a Tom Cruise-starrer, Legend, that bombed at the box office, and
that scared the producers, Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. Luckily enough,
Top Gun was a big hit, topping 1986 as the biggest box-office movie ever with
$360 million.
Real Estate
In the course of the years, Tom owns
and has owned impressive properties across America. In 2013, Tom sold a
tenth-floor condo worth $3 million in New York City's East Village. In
September 2015, he sold a multiple-residence property in Hollywood Hills worth
$11.4 million. Eva Longoria bought it. In May 2016, Tom sold his estate in
Beverly Hills to billionaire financier Leon Black for $40 million. Tom bought
the house for $30.5 million while he was still with Katie Holmes in 2006. In
2018, he used $11.8 million in acquiring several units in a condo complex near
the world headquarters of the Church of Scientology in Clearwater, Florida.
Tom built a large mansion at
Telluride, Colorado during the mid-1990s at the time he was married to Nicole
Kidman. His Telluride property, in fact, boasts of 320 acres within which the
main house spans 10,000 square feet with seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, horse
stables, and a private helipad. For years, he lobbied the local airport to
extend its runway for larger private jets. In 2010, he got what he wanted; that
is, the extension of the runway. In 2016, he listed this property at $59
million but eventually did not find a buyer. He relisted the house in 2018 and
did not find a buyer again. He listed the house in March 2021 for $39.5
million. Ultimately, in May 2021, Tom sold this property for precisely $39.5
million. Here is a video tour from a prior listing:
The major factor that has helped Tom
become one of the wealthiest actors as opposed to just a very rich one is that
he has produced many of the films he has starred in. In 1993, together with
Paula Wagner, he set up Cruise/Wagner Productions. The films made under it so
far have made about $3 billion all over the world. For many years, they had an
exclusive deal with Paramount, which seemed to end in the year 2006 when
comments made by Tom concerning psychiatry and anti-depressants created ripples
in the industry. Since then, funding has been provided by hedge funds and the
founder of the Washington Redskins, Dan Snyder. In 2006, Paula and Tom were
invited to resurrect the United Artists, which had fallen on hard times. While
she left UA in 2008, she and Tom still own 30% of the studio.
