Early life and education
Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on October 23, 1976, in Vancouver, British Columbia. His father, James Chester Reynolds, served as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman before retiring to be a food wholesaler. His mother, Tamara Lee (née Stewart), worked in retail sales. Reynolds has three older brothers and tells how he is not seen as the younger brother but as a moving target, "because his brothers usually get physical and I'm not able to retaliate." They also "protected me" from their father with whom he had a complex and a little estranged relationship. Reynolds's paternal grandfather, Chester, was a farmer and member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Stettler from 1940 to 1944. Reynolds is of Irish ancestry raised as a Catholic in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighborhood and from Vanier, Ontario, now part of Ottawa. An acting career started at thirteen years of age. During his teenage years, he joined drama classes-which he failed-and briefly worked as a busboy at a restaurant and held night shifts at a grocery store in Vancouver. He described his co-workers in the latter as "the funniest people on Earth" and called them "some of my biggest impressions as a performer". Reynolds completed grades nine and ten at Prince of Wales Secondary School, was expelled from the school for stealing a teacher's car, attended grades eleven and twelve at Kitsilano Secondary School, graduating in 1994 with actor Joshua Jackson. Mint Mobile
He bought a stake in Mint Mobile, the low-cost prepaid mobile phone service provider, in November 2019. He has starred in various advertisement campaigns for Mint Mobile services. In March 2023, news broke that T-Mobile would acquire Mint Mobile for cash and stock, $1.35 billion in total-39 percent cash ($526 million), 61 percent stock ($823 million). It is believed that Ryan owned 25 percent of Mint. If this is true, his share on the cash side would be $131 million pre-tax, about $70 million post-tax. In November 2020, Ryan and fellow comic actor Rob McElhenney bought a Welsh soccer team named Wrexham AFC. At the time of the purchase, Wrexham AFC was in the fifth division of English soccer, four leagues below the Premier League. They were able to buy the club with no money down, but they did agree to put up roughly $2.6 million for infrastructure improvements.
