Early life
Robert
John Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York City, the
younger of two children. His father, Robert Downey Sr. (né Elias), was a
filmmaker, while his mother, Elsie Ann (née Ford), was an actress, appearing in
Downey Sr.'s films. Downey's father was one half Lithuanian, one quarter
Hungarian, and one quarter Irish; Downey's mother had Scottish, German, and
Swiss roots.
His
dad was a filmmaker and whatever it was, he was usually moving somewhere, so
Downey had a very rather multiple resident in many places including Woodstock,
New York; London; New Mexico, California; Connecticut; and Greenwich Village. They
went from great wealth to near poverty for whatever movies were successful.
Downey was "surrounded by drugs" as a child. His father was a drug
addict; his mother was an alcoholic. He got to take drugs when he was very
young. He said his father offered him marijuana at six and later on gave him
cocaine as a child. His father later said that he did regret it. Downey
insisted that he and his father first really did drugs together at eight and
later this drug took over and became the emotional bond between him and his
father. He said, "When my dad and I would do drugs together, it was like
him trying to express his love for me in the only way he knew how."
American
actor, born April 4, 1965, Downey Jr. commonly called as RDJ was son of
filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. And with films as a lead actor has gained worldwide
over $14 billion making Downey one of the highest grossing actors of all time.
Time magazine named Downey one of 100 most influential people in the world in
2008 and Forbes listed him among Hollywood's highest paid actors from 2013 to
2015. He has a lot to his credit, including Academy Awards, an Emmy Award,
three Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild
Awards.
The
1970 film Pound was his father's Robert Downey Sr. work in which Downey made
his film debut at age five. Then he worked with members of the Brat Pack in the
teen films Weird Science (1985) and Less than Zero (1987). Downey's appearance
as Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 biopic Chaplin brought him a BAFTA award for
Best Actor and the first of his two Academy award nominations. Following a
stint in the Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility on drug charges, he
joined the cast of Ally McBeal in 2000 and won a Golden Globe Award for the
role. Downey was dismissed from the show in 2001 due to further drug charges.
He spent some time in a court-mandated drug treatment program, and
subsequently, he has been sober since 2003.

Drug Issues
Downey
reached a very rough patch on his career path with heroin abuse. He got
arrested on various counts of drug abuse from 1996 to 2001. Different at various
times, Downey, found possessing cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, went through a
continuous cycle of rehab treatment but found himself relapsing again and
again. In April 1996, he was speeding down Sunset Boulevard and got pulled over
while high and in possession of heroin, cocaine, and an unloaded .357 Magnum
handgun. Arrested, he was out on parole a month later and entered a neighbor's
house while under the influence of something and then lay down on one of the
beds in that neighbor's house. He was given three years of probation and
mandated to undergo drug testing.
Career Comeback
On
a personal note, starting his career again was not an easy task for Downey
after defeating his drug demons. Because productions used insurance companies
that would not insure him at any price, Downey became essentially unhirable. He
was able to achieve this thanks to Mel Gibson, who has been a friend of Downey
since "Air America." He paid Downey's insurance bond to make possible
his performing in "The Singing Detective." Downey and his friend
successfully completed the movie without any issues, so other filmmakers now
became prepared to hire him again.
Real Estate
Robert
owns a number of properties in Los Angeles alone. His real estate portfolio is
probably worth nothing less than around $40-50 million. In 2012, he bought a
house in Santa Monica, Ca, for $4 million. In 2009, he bought a seven-acre
estate in Malibu with equestrian facilities for $13.44 million. He also bought
a house in Malibu in 2017 for $4 million. He has residential and commercial
properties in Venice, California, a $2.5 million home in the Pacific Palisades,
and also has a beachfront house in Manhattan Beach.
