Early life

Bae Su-ji was born on October 10, 1994, in Buk District, Gwangju, South Korea, to Bae Wan-young, former coach of the national youth taekwondo team, and Jeong Hyun-sook. Bae is the younger sister of an older sibling and younger brother. She attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul and graduated in 2013. Before her debut, she worked as an online shopping model and was part of a street dancing crew to prove to her parents that she was serious about becoming an idol.

Career

2009-2010: Beginnings with Miss A

In 2009, Bae auditioned for Mnet Superstar K and was actually eliminated during the preliminary round but caught the attention of a scout from JYP Entertainment; shortly thereafter, she became a trainee after singing a small part of one of Younha's songs called Love.

2010-2016: Rising popularity and acting debut

October 2010 still saw Bae as the fixed host for MBC Show! Music Core along with Minho and Onew, two members of Shinee, and Jiyeon, of T-ara. She disengaged it in October 2011 and ended up hosting other events such as the Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and Mnet 20's Choice Awards where she won an award under the category "Hot New Star of 2011".

Bae pursued acting apart from her group activities. The teen drama Dream High, which aired on KBS from January 3 to February 28, was her acting debut. She also released an OST for it, titled "Winter Child".

In May 2014, Bae starred in the film The Sound of a Flower playing Jin Chae-seon, Korea's first female pansori singer. The movie was released in 2015, and it recounts the woman's trying journey to become a public musician in an era which does not allow her gender to perform in public during the Joseon dynasty. She underwent training in pansori for a year to prepare herself for the role.

2017-Present: Debut as a Solo Recording

Bae kick-starts her career as a solo artist in January 2017 with the EP Yes? No?. The pre-released single, "Pretend," rolled out on January 17 and achieved an all-kill on Korean music charts. The title track, "Yes, No, Maybe," was rolled out a week after, on January 24. In February 2017, she released a duet with the singer Park Won, titled "Don't Wait for Your Love." She then came back to television with Lee Jong-suk in the fantasy romance While You Were Sleeping, which was set to air from September 2017. On December 27, following the announcement of Min's departure, JYP Entertainment announced the disbandment of Miss A. Bae renewed her contract with JYP Entertainment.

Bae's pre-released single "In Love with Someone Else" was launched on January 22, 2018 and immediately registered a real-time all-kill. Her second mini album, Faces of Love, was released on January 29 with the title song "Holiday." On February 14, she released the music video for her b-side track "Sober." On March 9, Bae released her fourth music video for the single "Midnight," featuring a piano segment from Yiruma.
