Early life
Hashmi was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India on 24 March
1979. His father Syed Anwar Hashmi is a businessman and acted in the mystery
film Baharon Ki Manzil (1968) and his mother Maherrah Hashmi is a housewife.
His paternal grandfather Syed Shaukat Hashmi migrated to Pakistan after the
partition of India, where he became a journalist as well as a film director,
and his grandmother Meherbhano Mohammad Ali (popular by screen name Purnima)
was an actress who remained in India. Meherbano Mohammad Ali married
producer-director Bhagwan Das Varma later, thus making him the step-grandfather
for Hashmi and Hashmi a part of the Varma family. Hashmi, too, belongs to the
Bhatt family since Meher bano was the sister of Shirin Mohammad Ali, mother of
the producers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt, thus Hashmi's uncles. Hashmi is
the second cousin of the director Mohit Suri, with whom he has worked on many
films, and actresses Pooja Bhatt and Alia Bhatt, and actor Rahul Bhatt.
Hashmi did his schooling at Maneckji Cooper Education TrustSchool and later went to Sydenham College in Mumbai for a bachelor's degree
from the University of Mumbai.
Emraan Anwar Hashmi (born 24 March 1979) is an Indian film
actor active in Hindi cinema. Initially recognized for his representation of
bold characters in films, he has later embraced major roles. Considered one of
India's most maverick actors, he has been nominated for the Filmfare Award four
times. Hashmi's career as an actor started after he served as an assistant
director for the 2002 horror Raaz. By 2004, Hashmi was already a part of the
league of leading actors in Hindi cinema after his success in several hit
thrillers like Murder (2004), Zeher (2005), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), Kalyug
(2005), Aksar (2006), and Gangster (2006). Following this, however, Hashmi
began to be a part of mostly below-average-grossing films until he starred in
Awarapan (2007), an action-drama that garnered widespread acclaim.
The year 2008 marked the resurrection for Hashmi when his
role as a conman in the crime drama Jannat gave him a much-deserved boost.
Subsequently, he bagged a lot of appreciation for his portrayals of eclectic
characters in horror film Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009), biographical
drama The Dirty Picture (2011), psychological thriller Murder 2 (2011),
romantic comedy Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (2011), crime thriller Jannat 2 (2012),
and supernatural thrillers Raaz 3 (2012) and Ek Thi Daayan (2013). His stellar
acts in the underworld drama Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010) and the
political thriller Shanghai (2012) earned him two nominations for Filmfare
Award for Best Supporting Actor. This was followed by another dismal set of
films and a break, which ended with the well-received action thriller success
Tiger 3 (2023), affording him his third nomination for Best Supporting Actor at
the Filmfare.
Apart from acting in films, Hashmi launched an auto-biographical book on his son's illness and is an active celebrity endorser. He has been married to Parveen Shahani since 2006, his childhood love, and they have a son together.
